President’s Post Spring 2010

Jamie Heilicher, JHSUM President

Have we got a gift for you!

For over 25 years JHSUM has been the singular cultural organization gathering, protecting and presenting the stories of Upper Midwest Jewish life .  We have won accolades from none other than Brandeis Professor Dr. Jonathan Sarna, who calls us “one of the best local Jewish historical societies in the county”.  This year it has been particularly challenging to maintain our activities and excellence with dwindling resources.  We scaled back on exhibits and publications.  Rather than taking the lead on programming we have sought out partnerships that keep us in the public eye.

Every year when we prepare our annual budget we try to anticipate the generosity of supporters like you. Your direct individual contributions provide nearly 85 percent of our annual income.  This year, we didn’t hear from enough of you to meet our projections.  Our Annual Giving Campaign has fallen well behind our $25,000 goal. Can we count on you to give to the future by making a contribution today?

We would like to reward those of you who act quickly.  Any gifts of  $50 or more will admit you to any one of the three Minneapolis Jewish Film Festival screenings JHSUM is presenting, or be our guest on May 9th for “On the Road: Urban Jews in Rural Places”. View all of our programming here.

We deeply appreciate our friends who value JHSUM’s efforts to promote the vitality and continuity of Jewish culture in Minnesota and the Dakotas. You understand our collections constitute an important window on our heritage and are worth saving and sharing.  We can’t maintain collections, create programs and deliver reference services without your support.

If you haven’t made your new or renewed Annual Giving contribution this year, now is the time. It’s easy for you to act now.  Use the attached envelope or log on to GiveMn.org and click on Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest or call 952-381-3363 and Katherine Tane will be glad to help you with a Visa or Master card payment.  Please indicate on the return envelope or online form which show you would like a ticket to.  We will hold your ticket under your name at the door on the night of the event.

Jamie, I have a New York Times dated May 15, 1948 with headlines announcing the establishment of the state of Israel.
Let me know if the society wants it and when you’ll pick it up.

    Hi Frank:

Thank you for the offer of the NYTimes for May 15, 1948. It may be a bit of a surprise, but I will decline your kind offer of the Times. We are able to get it online, which saves us the need to store a print copy. Many thanks for thinking of us.
