JHSUM appreciates gifts of financial support, family artifacts and volunteer time. We invite you to consider making a contribution to help bring Jewish history to life today and for generations to come.
Donating Financial Support
JHSUM captures stories that make up our collective Jewish Midwest history and you can play a vital role in preserving these stories. Look on the at how many ways you can generously support keeping the stories of our past part of our future.Consider becoming a Life Member for $1000.
Honor or memorialize someone with a L’DOR VA’DOR Fund designation with a one time gift of $1,000 or a pledge paid over a number of years.
Gifts of cash to JHSUM are fully deductible – up to a maximum of 50% of your adjusted gross income.
Consider making a gift of appreciated stock you have held for more than one year to JHSUM. You will receive a charitable deduction for the entire value of the stock and avoid capital gains tax on the appreciation.
Israeli Bonds can be used to make a charitable gift.
Some employers match charitable gifts, making your donation to JHSUM worth even more. Simply enclose your company’s matching gift form with your check and mail.
Please consider establishing a
Named fund with a gift of $10,000 cash or pledges made over a period of years.
Please
consider naming JHSUM as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy .
A charitable gift made directly from your IRA to JHSUM permits you to give “over and above” the usual deductible amount of 50% of annual income and counts toward all or part of your Required Annual Distribution. Your reportable income will be lowered by the amount of the gift and can save you taxes.
A simple statement in your Will or Living Trust leaving a bequest to JHSUM may be fully deductible in determining your estate taxes. You will want the provision to state our legal name: Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation in Minnesota. It would be helpful if you would notify JHSUM of your bequest so you can be acknowledged and honored and JHSUM can plan for the future. Gifts of cash to JHSUM are fully deductible – up to a maximum of 50% of your adjusted gross income.
Your ongoing support matters deeply. We thank you for your generous support in keeping the stories of our past part of our future.
All gifts and beneficiary designations should be made to Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest, for the benefit of the Jewish Historical Society. Be sure to consult your professional advisor to determine the tax advantages of these giving opportunities.

Your IRA Can Make History
A new federal law (The Pension Protection Act of 2006) presents a unique opportunity for you to use your IRA to support JHSUM without adverse tax consequences.
For a limited time, donors age 70 ½ or older can instruct their IRA trustee to make a direct distribution of up to $100,000 per year to the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest. A direct distribution counts toward an annual IRA distribution requirement.
This charitable IRA rollover opportunity is only available for gifts made in 2006 and 2007. We encourage the use of these funds to establish an endowment or designated fund to support a project of your choice or to support JHSUM’s general operations.
Unlike a cash withdrawal from an IRA, direct contributions will be excluded from income for federal purposes and not taxed. These donations will not be eligible for a charitable tax deduction, but they will not count toward the annual percentage limitation on other deductible gifts.
For more information, please contact Katherine Tane, executive director, at (952) 381-3363 or ktane@jhsum.org. We encourage you to seek the advice of your professional advisor before you make a charitable IRA rollover gift.
