Act Fast and Your IRA Can Make History!
Your last chance for IRA charitable donations ends this year on December 31, 2009
If you are age 70 ½ or older, you can still make a tax-free gift from your IRA to JHSUM. A direct distribution counts towards an annual IRA distribution requirement. Unlike a cash withdrawal from an IRA, direct contributions will be excluded from income for federal purposes and are not taxed. These donations will not be eligible for a charitable tax deduction, but they will not count toward the annual percentage limitation on other deductible gifts.
We encourage the use of these funds to establish an endowment or designated fund to support a project of your choice or to support JHSUM’s general operations. Instruct your IRA plan administrator to make a transfer directly from your account to JHSUM of up to $100,000 and receive the tax benefit. Always talk to your professional advisor regarding tax consequences before you make a charitable IRA rollover gift.
