"Cornerstones: A History of North Minneapolis" explores the neighborhood's diverse past through the power of place. Co-produced with the University of Minnesota and the U's Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center on historic Plymouth Avenue, Cornerstones is an hour-long journey through the history of Minnesota's least understood neighborhood.

The Settlement Houses That Grew the Jewish and Black Communities in North Minneapolis

The Emmanuel Cohen Center and Phyllis Wheatley Settlement House were the centers of community life for the Jewish and Black communities in North Minneapolis. The Phyllis Wheatley Settlement House was the center of the Harlem Renaissance in Minneapolis. Both settlement houses were the cornerstones of their communities culture and life.​

​Tifereth B’nai Jacob was an orthodox ‘shul’ or synagogue nestled in the heart of what was one of the most notable Jewish neighborhoods in the upper Midwest in the early and mid 20th century.

Because it was a safe-space in an otherwise anti-Semitic city, Near North Minneapolis became known in the Jewish community as a ‘gilded ghetto.’ Many Minnesotans of note, including the filmmaking brothers Coen, can draw their community lineage to the historic Jewish Northside.​

Plymouth Avenue: A Street That's Seen Its Share Of Racial Conflict

Plymouth Avenue, known for racial riots in the 1960s, was a place of racial conflict long before due to the Jewish neighborhood and the anti-semitism in Minneapolis. The opening of The Way, a radical center dealing with Black and White racial issues in the late 60s, symbolized the changes of the community from a predominately Jewish community to a predominately Black community.
